Huangkeng Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Eastern Fujian. The Huangkeng Formation was erected by Li Jianhai in 1994. The section for the designation is on the highway south of the Huangkeng Village of Fuqing City, Fujian.
Lithology and Thickness
The Huangkeng Formation is represented by a set of purple red sedimentary-volcanic eruptive rock series, which is divided into the upper and lower members: Lower member is built up by purple gray-purple red tuffaceous sandy conglomerate, sandstone and siltstone with dacitic tuff, lying unconformably on the Chishui Formation. Upper member is built up by purple gray and purple red dacite and dacitic ignimbrite. Andesite basalt is often seen at the base and the top of the formation is overlain disconformably by tuffaceous sandy conglomerate of the Zaixia Fm (Zhaixia Fm). The Huangkeng Formation is 1110.8 m in thickness.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The formation shows a remarkable angular discordance with the underlying Nanyuan Gr (Xiaoxi Fm) or older strata.
Upper contact
Lies disconformably under the Zaixia Fm (Zhaixia Fm)
Regional extent
The formation occurs on the margin of the Cretaceous volcanic basalt basin in east Fujian. It is persistent in lithology, and varies considerably in thickness ranging from 340 to 1838.3 m. The lower part of the formation is quite thick in the Yunshan of Yongtai-Wuhushan of the Fuzhou basin, while the upper member is thick in Lingtongshan of Pinghe and the Luoyuan County.
